Cat Training – The Meows And The Purrs

A Cat ‘meows’. Yes it sounds so good but if it meows loudly and continuously, then the same sound becomes irritating. What do you think the reason can be? Is it hungry?

YES and NO

Yes, hungry, it can be, but apart from this there can many other reasons, why it is ‘meowing’. The reason may be anything it may be because it is just bored, or can be because it has suffering from some kind of discomfort or has some medical problem.

What should you do it she keeps meowing? Offer her milk…

No! You should not offer her any food when it is incessantly meowing, as it will think that this as a kind of reward and would keep meowing… This will increase its bad behavior and would affect the relationship between you and the cat.

Offer it food, when it stops meowing, this will be registered in its mind, that if it does not meow unnecessarily, it will be rewarded. You will need to get your cat to learn when it is appropriate to meow, when they really need something. You need to see that all the cat needs is always available to it, as far as possible. This would mean your cat will do less meowing.

Cats are usually lazy and would not exercise by themselves. They love to cat nap all day long. You need to set up a playtime and a play area. Keep Strings, ball, catnip items, or simple home made items that your cat will love. See that the items kept are without any sharp edges which might hurt your pet. This will help it get into a good habit of keeping itself occupied while you are busy with something else.

You should spend sometime in a day and preferable keep it same time everyday. A good time would be when you return home from work and you want to relax. It is proved that playing with or just stroking cats helps one relax and keeps blood pressure under control.

Purring is another characteristic of a cat. Purring signifies that the cat is content. Follow this with caution as purring does not always signify that the cat is happy. Cats also purrs if they are ill, sick or dying. Pay close attention to your cat, when it is purring and check for any physical signals which might suggest that it is not feeling well.

If it stops purring, that too signifies that it has some discomfort maybe it may be sick with a virus or something could be making her feel sick. These are signals to suggest you that seek the services of a veterinarian and have your cat examined. Non-purring may also happen when cats get older or maybe the purring is so soft that you are unable to hear them it.

As in humans, emotions play a very important part of a behavior in your cat. Fears, grief, compassion, jealously affect the behavior of your feline friends too.

* As fear is intimating to us so is it for them, it may have a fear of getting hurt or may be afraid of another animal.

* Cat would exhibit grief, when something tragic happens to it like loosing its owner, the same way as we do when we loose our near or dear ones.

* Cats have compassion for other cats.

* Your meowing and purring pet also turns green with jealousy if it has to share its owner, home, toys or food.

It is these emotions, you need to consider, when you are training your cat. It would be disturbed and might resort to excessive meowing and refuse to listen to its master. When they show the signs of being emotional, you need to find what is affecting their behavior.

Are they hurt or are they ill or is it just their bad behavior.

Cats, being emotional, need your attention all the time. You need to observe, if they are satisfied with the location, they are comfortable with other pets or other members of the family and you should always be aware of their actions.

Training a pet is tricky. It is Time and Patience which will help you through. They are to be treated like our children, teach them good behavior and ignore their bad attitude.

Reward your cat for being good. You need to give time to your cat to teach them how to play with toys and other items which you have kept for their playing. Always feed you cat with healthy food; these will ensure good medical condition and happy-content behavior.

Get toys which they would practically like to play with. Do not go in for toys which you would like them to play with.

Love them, Hug them and be kind to them, and you would be able to share the most beautiful relationship.

Cat Training And Cat Behavior – Will Cat Problems Be Solved

The cat’s probable social behavior varies extremely from ferociously self-determining to compatibly outgoing with other felines. According to a few professionals a cat’s social qualities are “in evolution” from self-dependent to mutually dependent.

In reality, a cat’s behavior and resultant societal relations with other cats are dependent on factors such as population density of neighborhood cats, premature knowledge and the amount of food available in the vicinity.

Variation In The Population Density And Grouping Dynamics:

The family cat is a solitary seeker. It requires a large area to catch adequate prey, while scrounging for itself and it will protect that area from other cats too. From a study, it is revealed that a vicinity of sq mile (1 sq km) will sustain nearly five cats in the agricultural areas of Europe, North America and Australasia.

Altering circumstances such as new felines, absence of few cats or new people greatly affects the social dynamics of cats. Social acquaintances generally develop between females and kittens, and rarely by adult males in a characteristic assembly of tamed cats, who stay with humans. Cats settle differences normally by visual contact or occasionally by a swipe of its paw once, there is friendliness amongst cats residing in the same place.

When two cats meet up suddenly, the cat that has a higher status is generally the superior at that time. However, it might not be the same during the next meeting. Odor and well-being also affects the status of a cat. When a cat comes home after undergoing treatment at a hospital for some medical issue, sometimes a healthy household cat attacks it. Once a status is formed in a multi cat home, however differences are rare.

Behavioral Changes Caused By Food:

When food is available in plenty, social relations increase because the reasons for fighting decrease. Sparsely distributed hunting cats exhibit defensive gestures rather than social while well-fed cats in neighborhood areas usually exhibit outgoing social interactions. Household cats are the friendliest, since food is aplenty at home.

The Importance Of Family And Matriarchy:

One should not expect a household cat to be pleased with the arrival of a new feline just because it gets plentiful food and it has a very easy life. It is nearly impossible. Cats can get along with one another only, if they share a blood relationship.

The other important thing is early castration. Although untamed male cats make very less social relations than females, neutered male cats make the same number of social contacts as neutered female cats. Neutering improves male feline relationships considerably.

The cat family is mostly matriarchal. Untamed cat population generally contains four or more blood-related feline generations. The most frequent social communication amongst females is licking rather than rubbing.

The mother, grandmother, sisters and other female members remove the male kittens from the colony as soon as they mature and exhibit rough play behavior. These males accompany other males, who generally hover around and prevent any unrelated male from coming near.

Is It Necessary To Train Cats?

People who own cats may come across this question very often. Well, the answer is yes. Imagine a cat causing damage to valuable articles at home such as glassware, the sofa set, electronic items such as DVD player or computer.

The owner may run wild even at the thought of the cat doing this. Hence, it is essential to train cats so that they become familiar and get used to the environment around them. For the human-cat relationship to last long, it is recommended for owners to train their cats with extreme love and affection.

Bases Of Trainability:

Cats show their own interest in particular things. Cats like nutritional food and do activities that refresh them. Recreational activities may include watching squirrels climb the tree, pouncing on passing toys and finding out the things hidden in the cardboard box, left in the center of the living room.

Cat owners know that cats are curious by nature. They like to examine things around them, especially new things. They smell it and sometimes even sleep on it. To help a cat overcome shyness, the owner may move a catnip mouse across the room to catch the attention of the cat. This will draw the cat nearer to the object and help get over the tough task easily. This helps the cat to mix up with other members of the family quickly.

In the wild, cats tend to work alone. However, when they become part of a family, they rely on their owners for their usual tasks such as eating and bathing. This way cats develop an eternal relationship with their owners and other cats as well. Cat owners need to train their cats on normal activities and things such as relaxing, playing and eating.

Cats have the habit of playing, scratching and rubbing their body against objects. Many cats jump, look from the windows, sleep in many places and hang out with their owners in certain locations.

Some cats run back and forth in a house for no reason. Here, the activity can cause damage to the furniture. If the owner troubles the cat, the cat may raise its claw in self-defense. Several institutes engaged in training pet animals do their bit to bring abilities of pets at the forefront. Owners may take some time out of their busy schedule to visit such institutes for the betterment of their cats.

Cats – Waste Disposal

Disposal of cat waste is not a problem. Generally, cats tend to remain clean. It is in their nature to bury or hide their droppings. Owners may make available litter trays for their cats.

They may bury solid waste from the litter trays. The uncontaminated litter can be left in the tray. Pet shops sell biodegradable cat litters that break easily, when they add it to garden beds.

Litters built of clay break down slowly and as they are white in color, the owner can easily notice them in the garden bed. Cat owners may even wrap the contaminated litter and place it in garbage bins at home.

Cat Training. All questions answered! Part 2

In 1st part of the article I gave you initial information about cats natural behaviour and some ideas, what to pay attention to during training your cat.

2nd part of the article will continue our discussion about cats’ natural habits and at the end of the article I will give you principles of teaching your cat few commands.

From the very beginning of the cat’s training you need to take under consideration fact that cats get tired very quick from the same actions repetition. Because of that, duration of training must be just a few minutes at a time, or else cat will gain aversion to the training, and after this you will never force your cat do action again, even giving it the most tasty pieces. While working with kittens, don’t train them more than 2 – 3 minutes at a time, and after training always let kittens go to play! Adult cats are able for training longer periods of time, although between them you may find individuals, which are totally unable to be trained, and at the same time – cats, who are inborn actors, able to repeat the same tricks during training again and again with big pleasure.

You must be prepared to complement and encourage your cat at any time during training period, if it has done those things you taught your cat. Violation of connection “right action – reward” at the early stage of training can lead not only to cancellation all previous achievements, but also your pet may completely lose all interest to the training. Whatever happens around you, your cat must get its reward immediately after completion of the appropriate action. After some time, when your cat memorize and easy does everything, you want from it, you may do without delicacy and use only caress and approving words.

Nevertheless, even in the case, when cat willingly respond to your proposition to act in special way, very often required effect couldn’t be achieved. The most frequent cause of failures of the inexperienced trainer is reward’s delay and also incorrect selection of the sound signal that represents this action. You must not use, as a sound signal, word or phrase, that your cat knows very well! And it is totally senselessly to reward your cat with the same word or phrase for performing different actions! You must use specific words in order for your cat to distinguish these words from just background noise.

If you are limited in time to train your cat, or you don’t have patience at all, do not make any attempts to teach your cat any tricks and actions! Cat, who lives with you for long period of time, learns to understand many phrases addressed to it and your gestures too, and most of all cat will feel your moods and conditions! Cat, who is not, trained any tricks, who lives its own life, is not less interesting to observe. It is wonderful partner for games, and creature, who gives you its love!

Here I gave you two actions to teach your cat just to have a feeling of the training process.

“Come!”

You may expect that cat will come, after hearing your call, to look forward to something pleasant. Call your cat when it is feeding time. You need to say cheerfully and with pleasure: “Tom (or whatever your cat’s name is), come here!” You must call cat by its name! If cat doesn’t come after your call, take it, place cat near the plate for food and say: “Tom (or whatever your cat’s name is), come here!” and put food in the plate straight away. After your cat has connected its coming with feeding, you may start calling your cat in other occasions. And every time when cat fulfil your command, you must reward it, giving it tasty piece of food. Later you may substitute delicacy with just you caress.

Do not start training, calling cat for medical procedures or bathing! Do not call cat with loud and angry voice in order to tell it off!

“Sit!”

Place cat on the floor or a couch, preferably for feeding, and stand on your knees next to it. When cat will get bored and it will sit, give a command “Sit!” at the same time. Command must coincide with action! Use only word “sit” for the command and reward your cat at once, giving delicacy, if it acts correctly! If cat doesn’t sit, softly push its back down, giving the command “Sit!” and rewarding cat’s sitting position.

“Stand!”

To teach your cat “stand” command you must use help of your hand. Bend your arm with angle 90 degrees, making a barrier in front of the cat. Choose appropriate moment, when cat will come close to you, make a barrier and say: “Stand!” If cat obeys your command, staying still, reward your cat straight away. After some time, when cat memorize this command, you don’t need to do any gestures.

“Fetch!”

Throw a cork or any other small object, which your cat gladly carries in its mouth in a short distance and say: “Fetch!” If cat ignores you and the cork after few attempts, stop the training for some time. If cat support game and comes back with the cork, reward it! If cat runs for cork, but brings it to the corner or other place, instead of going back to you, ignore your pupil this time. You should reward only right actions!

“Give pad!”

First – teach your cat how to sit after command “Sit!” Then, while cat is sitting, softly lift its foreleg and say at the same time: “Give pad!” Reward cat straight away. After practising some time, give a command and extend your arm. If cat gives its pad – reward cat. If cat disobeys, softly take its forepaw, say: “Give pad!” and reward your cat.

Jumps through the hoop.

In this exercise you need to use appropriate size hoop. Place the hoop on the floor and stand from one side of it opposite your cat. Lure cat with some delicacy through the hoop. If cat accustomed to the leash, lead it through the hoop. When cat comes closer to the hoop, say: “Go!” and after it goes through the hoop reward it. After your cat has learnt how to go through the hoop, lift the hoop over the floor for few centimeters. And reward the cat each time, when it jumps through the lifted hoop. If cat tries to walk around the hoop – move the hoop in order to keep it every time on the cat’s way. After few training sessions your cat will be able to jump easily through the hoop, which lifted over the floor for about half a meter by your command “Go!”

I hope my advices gave you useful information not only how to teach you cat few tricks, but also helped you understand better this wonderful creature, who lives next to you!

Cats Training Myths

There are many people out there that are surprised to find out that cats CAN be trained. It is a very slow, and lengthy process and can only be done at the speed the cat is comfortable with, but no the less very possible.

First, the cat owner needs to know that cats don’t speak our language, so we need to familiarize ourselves with how a cat thinks and learns. cats become skillful.

Cats learn by familiarity. If the experience is agreeable they will attempt to replicate, but if the experience makes them gloomy they will stay away from doing it in the future. Cats also learn by the course of rewards and praises.

However, the rewards need to be reserved for special occasions and not an everyday affair. For good results you should reward your feline friend with a genuine incentive like her preferred delicacy.

While training a cat, penalty is out of bounds. Physical punishments can add to the violent streak in your pet and make her a rebel. She may also start avoiding you as a result of the spanking.

If her intentions are merely good-humored but are violent, you have to be firm with your reaction; so don’t reward her with attention sometimes and overlook other times. She will be perplexed and will learn to control her violent actions.

Cats run away or show the symptoms of nervousness and gloominess, even if slightly punished. Scolding, shouting, physical penalty and holding the incentive will not encourage the cat to change her behavior.

Therefore the training needs to be reward based with apparent indication and high-quality timing.

Focus on creating an enjoyable, satisfying, humorous and motivating rapport. Be convinced that no matter what the cat does, it is worthwhile and pleasing. Every cat is unique.

If your problem is that your cat scratches on your furniture then you can try covering it up or spraying a menthol or citrus aroma. These are unpleasant smells for kitty and they will avoid them.

After some time your cat will come to the conclusion that your furniture is an unhappy place to play and go somewhere else to amuse themselves.

Cats are very smart and at times will use other means of getting your attention. So if they are running around, pouncing, climbing, and acting otherwise like they’ve lost their minds, DO NOT give them any attention.

Get up and walk away from them. They will learn that this is not the correct way to get your attention, and will learn to play it your way.

Their boredom can be relieved by every day playing and soothing messages that help to cool down. While playing, keep in mind the predatory character of the cat. Behaviors like stalking, biting, pouncing, chasing, leaping, etc., are key factors of any play session.

Because of this, throughout the training, supply them with toys that look like prey. Try toys like ping pong balls, cardboard boxes, hanging ropes, scratching posts, false mice or anything that rolls.

If the cat likes to climb and walk around, it can be trained by creating a barrier track. Like loop up some twigs, pillars, shelves or climbing ramps. Hiding small, delicious preferred treats to cheer her to get climbing can be built-in as an element of the training.

Cats are very enjoyable and they can really be your best friend if you just handle them with care and diplomacy.
